Skin Deep Review

Sorry for not writing for ages everyone but basically I have had a lot of revision and work to do. Anyway.
While being away I had read Laura Jarratt's book skin deep. I was going on holiday and desperate for something to read and was willing to settle for anything. So when I saw the cover of this book it was a photo of some boy and girl looking at each other and I wasn't overly bought by it but as I rather liked the boys curly hair I had a look at the blurb.

''Ugly people don't have feelings. They're not like everyone else. They don't notice if you stare at them and turn away. And if they did notice, it wouldn't hurt them. They're not like real people. Or that's what I used to think. Before I learned...

After the car crash that leaves her best friend dead, Jenna is permanently scarred. She struggles to rebuild her life, but every stare in the street, every time she looks in the mirror, makes her want to retreat further from the world. Until she meets Ryan. Ryan's a traveler  When he and his mother moor their narrow boat on the outskirts of a village, she tells him this time it will be different. He doesn't believe her; he can't imagine why this place shouldn't be as unwelcoming as the rest. Until he meets Jenna. But as Jenna and Ryan grow closer, repercussions from the crash continue to reverberate through the community. And then a body is found.''

So I read the blurb and thought it deserved a shot not expecting much but I was honestly hooked after the first few pages. The story is told at two peoples point of view. Constantly switching from Jenna to Ryan. The story opens out at Jenna's point of view where she is having a flashback of the night her and her friends were in a car crash which killed her best friend leaving her with what is described as a hideous scar across her face. So many months on she still had this huge scar across her face and has lost all past confidence. It then switches to Ryan who is a traveler with his mum on a boat, In which they arrive at a village where they plan to live for a while since the leaving of his mums past boyfriend, Cole.  As the story goes on it's the typical boy meets girl, or I guess you could say some kind of modern version of beauty and the beast as Ryan is perfect. As their lives become entwined with one another and help each other through both their problems.

It's an amazing mix of drama and romance, and not going to lie, I fell in love with Ryan and the jokes he makes. The only complaint I had about the book was that Jenna often got on my nerves a bit by being incredibly over sensitive, but then when I think about it, I'd probably be the same if I lost my best friend and had a scar across my face.

I give the book a 4.5/5 and would definitely recommend it to anyone who's into the whole classic love stories and wants a bit of a break from the whole typical dark romance that floats about a lot at the moment.
